There's a scraping sound of a sigh. She hates this feeling. It hurts.

What if he comes back and

he does it again?

"No, Maelle. You can't do anything," he tells her gently. "This sort of melancholy is not something that you can fix. What you can do is be there for him if he wants it. To exist with him and meet him where he's at. If he doesn't want to see you, then just remind him from afar that you are there and that you support him."

She listens and with some time she nods. She doesn't really like that answer, she wants something to do and that doesn't feel like enough. But everything else she's done feels like it's just made things worse for him.

"Send him a message. Make it very clear that he doesn't need to respond before he's ready, or ever. And stick to that."

He sighs. "It's going to take time, Maelle."

While she is willing to listen, it's even less of something that she can do than she thought it might be. What's time to someone who spent one-hundred years being immortal? Nothing feels daunting and being as upset as she is it's making it harder for her to wrap her head around it.

So give him a message and then just

Even if it never gets better?

That's the hardest part. He knows that.

"You cannot make him better, Maelle. He has to do that on his own. The only thing you can do is be there for him."

There's a long silence before a harsh breath of a sigh.

"I'm here to help you, Maelle. No matter what that looks like." He puts a hand on hers again. "Do you want me to go? You should probably call Gustave."

She nods slowly. She should probably tell Gustave, or at least ask him to come home for now.

"I'm not going anywhere," he promises. "I'm right here for you."
