Sign Language Learning Info Post
May. 16th, 2026 04:11 pmOverview
This post is to organize the timeline and interactions possible for Maelle learning LSF or Langue des Signes Française in TLV specifically. Feel free to use this post to ask questions or let me know that your character is picking Option 2. The timeline is a rough idea based on research, characterization and some flexibility for what makes sense for her pacing of learning within an RP setting.
Timeline 2026-2027
April Started learning
June Alphabet, key phrases, words. IE: 'thank you', question words, basic greeting, etc.
September (6 month mark) Smaller sentences (3-5 words), basic sentence structure
November Basic conversations, everyday topics, more complex sentences
January Express greater details, more abstract concepts, some non-manual signing
February More specific topics outside of everyday, further detailed topics, capable of more complex sentence structures, more fluent non-manual signing
April (1 year mark) Rarely needing to spell to fill in words, greater vocabulary, capable with complex sentences, frequent/accurate use of non-manual signing
Post 1 year mark Specialty vocabulary gained over time, more natural/fluent speed with signing over time and use of non-manual signing, mistakes are rare
Interaction Guidelines
In TLV, language barriers are by player discretion. To ensure that LSF (or any other Sign Language) is being acknowledged equally as a language there are two routes I'd like to offer if she chooses to speak to someone using LSF as opposed to her comm. Also please note, she's mute, not deaf. You can talk at her and she'll do just fine understanding you.
Option 1: For characters who do not know and have no interest in learning a Sign Language. Also for characters who may know a different Sign Language (ASL, BSL, etc.) but have no intention to learn LSF.
Option 2: For characters who know a Sign Language (ASL, BSL, LSF, etc.), or who do not but want to learn LSF or another Sign Language with her.
Generally speaking, Option 1 is the anticipated default. But if you'd like to do Option 2, feel free to comment here or let me know so I can bear it in mind for tags and interactions to come.
And thank you all very much for your time and consideration with this. If there's anything that seems incorrect, inaccurate, or troublesome, please reach out so that it can be corrected or at the very least discussed. Thank you! ♥

Option 1: For characters who do not know and have no interest in learning a Sign Language. Also for characters who may know a different Sign Language (ASL, BSL, etc.) but have no intention to learn LSF.
For Option 1, please treat her speaking LSF as any other language used on the barge much like her typing in French but being understood despite the reader not knowing French. There will be mistakes while she's learning and I'll indicate that within the tags given. But the viewer should have full comprehension of what is signed.
Option 2: For characters who know a Sign Language (ASL, BSL, LSF, etc.), or who do not but want to learn LSF or another Sign Language with her.
For Option 2, feel free to struggle to understand her with the intention that the viewer is learning as well. This is intended to be more realistic and further development with both characters. More lost in translation on both ends works here with the intent that there is progress happening over time.
Generally speaking, Option 1 is the anticipated default. But if you'd like to do Option 2, feel free to comment here or let me know so I can bear it in mind for tags and interactions to come.
